Holidays in Italy
Christmas in Italy is a magical time filled with traditions, family, and FOOD. In our Winter Release, we introduce our members to some of the favorite holiday flavors we have come to love as Italian-Americans and frequent visitors to Italy.
Buon appetito!
This Season’s Vino
Bocelli Poggioncino
We were introduced to this Bocelli Estate Sangiovese as a sponsor of the new season of PBS’ Dream of Italy® travel show. Once we had a sip, we knew we had to share this bottle with our members in the winter release. This Sangiovese blend pairs beautifully with a variety of classic Italian dishes such as pastas, roasted meats, and aged cheeses, making it a versatile and delightful addition to any holiday dining experience.
Christmas Eve is the time for the Italian “Feast of the Seven Fishes”. Rooted in Roman Catholic tradition of avoiding meat on holy days, this has evolved into a cherished culinary tradition. These tuna and cheese stuffed cherry peppers known as “Peperoni con Tonno”, are the perfect way to celebrate your own Feast of the Seven Fishes. Enjoy on Christmas Eve or any day of the week as the perfect aperitivo snack.
Every day Danieli strictly handmakes Grissoni according to traditional recipes that have been handed down in secret. These crunchy breadsticks have a wonderful savory flavor, thanks to high-quality extra virgin olive oil and freshly milled Puglian flour. Once you’ve had one, it’s hard to resist eating the entire bag. Grissoni are an essential component of any aperitivo and holiday table. Try them wrapped in prosciutto, on a platter along with salumi and olives, or include in your bread basket for easy snacking during your meal.
The Frescobaldi Wine Bar in Florence has been a destination for our family for years. Each trip to Italy includes a celebratory meal in their small restaurant with a bottle of their Laudemio then snuck in our bag to share back at home. Frescobaldi’s dedication to sustainable and organic practices, production of high-quality olives cold-pressed within hours of harvest, are evident in its dark green color and intoxicating fragrance. Pour over everything!
In Italy, it is tradition to eat lentils just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. This is said to date back to Ancient Rome when lentils were given as gifts to wish friends a prosperous new year because of their resemblance to Roman coins. La Valletta Lentils, cultivated in the sun-kissed fields of Umbria, Italy, are renowned for their robust flavor and exceptional quality. Grown with care and expertise, these lentils are meticulously harvested and processed to preserve their natural freshness and nutritional value.
Lentils can be enjoyed on their own but we prefer to stir in the Oliveri Porcini Cream and then generously drizzle Laudemio EVOO before diving in.
Porcini mushrooms are masterfully blended with extra virgin olive oil into this fragrant, creamy spread. Oliveri crema di porcini makes it easy to incorporate the coveted aroma and intense flavor of porcini into many recipes. The jar is the perfect size – once it’s opened, it will be devoured immediately. Add to bruschetta, scoop it up with your grissoni or add depth to your lentils with our favorite little delicacy.
Move over, Nutella – this is how chocolate cream should taste. Extra virgin olive oil enhances this silken hazelnut chocolate spread, lending incredible smoothness and luster while allowing its rich chocolate flavor and roasted nut aroma to shine through. Noccioliva is wonderful addition to any holiday dessert; drizzle onto panettone, add to pastry cream to fill tarts, or serve a bowl of Noccioliva with fresh fruit and biscotti for dipping. Real chocolate lovers will enjoy this straight from the spoon. Dalla Fonte members will recognize il Colle Gusto as the same maker of our best-selling pistachio cream.
Loison Panettoncino Classico
Christmas and panettone are synonymous in Italian and Italian-American homes. The art of crafting this beloved Christmas delicacy began in the Veneto region and has been preserved and passed down through generations. This mini Classic Panettone by Loison is sweet and soft with hints of citrus and candied amarena cherries. Dario Loison uses a 72 hour leavening process and selects regional specialties from all over Italy and the world to create his masterpiece. The citron is from Diamante in Calabria, the oranges from Sicily, and Sultana raisins from Turkey. All packaged in beautiful designs created by his wife, Sonia.
We met the Loison family in Parma and immediately fell in love with their passion for creating the perfect panettone. Our favorite way to enjoy this amarena cherry version is to slather with noccioliva or dip in espresso. Absolutely divine!

MIke's Holiday Playlist
According to Mike, the only way to prepare a meal or sip a glass of wine is with music playing in the background. So each season he curates a collection of his favorite songs for enjoying your Tavola and Tavola + Vino boxes. This season, we bring out our favorite holiday classics by the Italians and Italian-Americans that we grew up listening to during Christmas celebrations with family.
